Tamil cinema has long embraced emotionally layered storytelling, and DNA, directed by Nelson Venkatesan, joins that tradition with bold, thought-provoking depth. Headlined by Atharva Murali and Nimisha Sajayan, the film explores the fragile boundaries of truth, mental illness, and relationships, making for an unsettling yet absorbing cinematic experience.

A Marriage Built on Hope—and Shattered by Doubt

At its core, DNA is not just a domestic drama but a psychological mystery driven by human pain and emotional complexity. Anand (played by Atharva Murali), a recovering alcoholic grieving the loss of his past lover, attempts to start over by marrying Divya (Nimisha Sajayan), a woman diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Their life takes an unexpected turn when Divya claims that the child she gave birth to is not hers.

What could have easily become a medical explanation is treated instead as a slow-burning psychological investigation. Anand believes Divya’s claim and begins a quiet yet determined journey to uncover the truth. Is this a case of mental delusion, or has something much darker occurred?

Performances That Elevate the Script

Atharva Murali delivers one of his most restrained and impactful performances to date. As Anand, he portrays grief, confusion, and commitment without theatrics. Nimisha Sajayan, known for her subtlety, is magnetic as Divya. Her portrayal of a woman trapped within her own mind—yet sharp enough to question the world around her—is both vulnerable and unsettling.

Supporting performances from Chethan, Ramesh Thilak, Balaji Sakthivel, Viji Chandrasekhar, and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub further enrich the film’s world without overwhelming the central plot.

Direction, Writing, and Music in Harmony

Director Nelson Venkatesan, co-writing with Atisha Vino, ensures that the film doesn’t sensationalize mental health. Instead, DNA raises difficult questions with sensitivity and restraint. The narrative structure keeps the audience guessing while subtly guiding them through the psychological landscape of both characters.

The film’s music, composed by Sathyaprakash, Srikanth Hariharan, Pravin Saivi, Sahi Siva, and Anal Akash, offers a soulful and somber backdrop. The background score by Ghibran heightens the emotional tension without overpowering the performances.

A Rare Tamil Film That Speaks to the Mind and Heart

What sets DNA apart is its refusal to offer easy answers. It dares to place its characters in morally and emotionally ambiguous territory and allows them to navigate their trauma and truth without grand resolutions. This honesty makes it one of the most memorable Tamil films of 2025.

The film’s climax is not defined by a single reveal, but by its emotional weight. Whether or not you believe Divya, the journey to that belief is what makes DNA a compelling watch.

Verdict: A Must-Watch for Mature Audiences

DNA is not designed for casual viewing. It demands patience, empathy, and reflection. But for those willing to engage, it offers a rich, deeply human experience.

Whether you’re drawn to emotional dramas or psychological thrillers, DNA delivers both—without compromise.
