Malayalam actor Mamitha Baiju is once again at the centre of online discussion over her casting in Dhanush’s upcoming Tamil film ‘Kara’, after an older interview resurfaced on social media.
The actor had previously addressed questions around the casting of non-Tamil actors in Tamil cinema, saying that she viewed the opportunity as a chance to explore different characters and become a more versatile performer.
Her comments have resurfaced at a time when Mamitha is reportedly undergoing treatment in hospital after falling ill with high fever and body pain. She recently informed fans that she would be unable to attend an Onam event in Australia because doctors had advised her to take complete rest.
Mamitha Baiju Defends Her Decision to Take ‘Kara’
In an interview with Sudhir Srinivasan, Mamitha was asked about the broader conversation surrounding casting choices in Tamil films.
Explaining why she accepted the role in ‘Kara’, the actor said that she saw the opportunity as part of her professional growth. Rather than restricting herself to characters based on language or familiar screen identities, she said she wanted to explore different kinds of roles.
“When I got the chance, I took it and as an actor I look towards more exploration, and how to be more versatile. I am getting a chance to do that and I am doing it,” Mamitha said.
She also acknowledged that the filmmaker ultimately decides who is suitable for a particular character.
According to Mamitha, her focus is on making the character convincing on screen, regardless of whether it represents a departure from what audiences may expect from her.
‘It Is My Responsibility to Push the Boundaries’
Mamitha further explained that she does not view working across language industries as a limitation.
“If it is a rural character, and I look convincing in it, then that is the biggest award for me. It is all about pushing the barrier, about the language also,” she said.
The actor added that exploring unfamiliar territory is part of her responsibility as a performer.
“It is my profession, and my responsibility to push the boundaries, and we have to do that,” Mamitha said.
Her comments reflect the larger debate around casting in regional cinema, particularly when actors from one South Indian film industry are chosen for roles in another.
Vignesh Raja Says Mamitha Was Selected on Merit
Director Vignesh Raja has also addressed the discussion surrounding Mamitha’s casting in ‘Kara’.
Speaking to Galatta Plus, the filmmaker said that marketability was not the deciding factor when he was selecting the actor for the role.
According to Raja, the team auditioned approximately 20 to 25 actors before choosing Mamitha.
“For me, content is important. When it comes to performance, I am absolutely certain that I will only hire an actor who does justice to my character. For this character, we auditioned close to 20-25 girls. But what Mamitha did in the audition, no one else came close,” he said.
Raja described the casting as a decision based on the actor’s audition and the requirements of the character rather than commercial considerations.
He also pushed back against the idea that a Tamil film should necessarily cast a Tamil actor simply because the story and language are Tamil.
The director compared the situation to the hypothetical case of a Telugu filmmaker directing a Tamil film and questioned whether the filmmaker would similarly be expected to restrict the creative team to people from the same language industry.
Why ‘Kara’ Casting Became a Talking Point
Mamitha Baiju’s casting became a subject of discussion because she is primarily recognised for her work in Malayalam cinema, while ‘Kara’ is a Tamil-language project.
The debate has raised familiar questions about representation, authenticity and whether actors should be selected according to their linguistic or regional identities.
Raja’s comments indicate that his priority was the performance required for the character. Mamitha, meanwhile, has framed the opportunity as part of her effort to expand her range as an actor.
The discussion ultimately reflects two different aspects of casting: the industry’s expectations around representation and a filmmaker’s creative choice when selecting an actor for a particular role.
Mamitha Baiju Shares Health Update From Hospital
Amid the renewed attention on her ‘Kara’ casting, Mamitha has also been dealing with a health setback.
In a video shared in connection with an event in Australia, the actor informed fans that she was currently undergoing treatment at a hospital and would not be able to travel as planned.
“Unfortunately, I will not be able to be there on the date that was confirmed. I am currently undergoing treatment at a hospital. If there had been any way possible, I would have come, but the doctors have advised me to take complete rest,” Mamitha said.
The actor expressed disappointment about missing the event but indicated that cancelling the trip was unavoidable because of her health.
Australia Onam Event Postponed
The Clyde Malayali Association had earlier announced Mamitha as a celebrity guest for its Onam celebrations in Australia.
Following the actor’s inability to travel, the organisation decided to postpone the programme rather than proceed with the event as originally scheduled.
Mamitha also apologised to the organisers and people who had been looking forward to meeting her.
“I want to come and meet the Clyde family. I apologise to everyone. It is because of this situation that I have had to cancel. I hope this can happen on another occasion,” she said.
The organisers are expected to announce a new date after coordinating with Mamitha’s team and the venue.
Mamitha Baiju’s Next Chapter With ‘Kara’
For Mamitha, ‘Kara’ represents another step beyond the Malayalam film industry and into a larger South Indian cinema landscape.
While the casting has prompted debate, both the actor and director have publicly maintained that the decision was driven by the role and her performance in the audition.
As the film moves forward, audiences will ultimately get the opportunity to judge Mamitha’s performance on screen.
